A Tutorial on Assessing Statistical Power and Determining Sample Size for Structural Equation Models

Lisa J. Jobst et al.

Summary: Structural equation modeling (SEM) is commonly used in psychology and other social sciences to test empirical hypotheses. However, most studies involving SEM do not conduct power analysis for sample size planning or evaluate the achieved power of the tests. This tutorial provides step-by-step instructions on a priori, post hoc, and compromise power analyses for various SEM applications. It emphasizes the importance of thoughtful sample size planning to ensure reliable and replicable results, particularly when small or medium-sized effects are expected.

Perspective-taking and belief in a just world matter: Adolescents' role experiences in bullying processes

Anett Wolgast et al.

Summary: Bullying is a serious problem worldwide, and research has found that low levels of social perspective-taking and belief in a just world play important roles in bullying. This study aimed to explore the relationships between students' visuospatial and dispositional social perspective-taking, emotional concern, personal belief in a just world, and their experiences in bullying roles. The results showed that experiences as a perpetrator, assistant, reinforcer, and defender were related to low visuospatial social perspective-taking, emotional concern was positively related to defender experiences, and personal belief in a just world was negatively associated with experiences as a perpetrator and a victim. These findings highlight the significance of perspective-taking and belief in a just world in the context of bullying roles.

Power Analysis for Parameter Estimation in Structural Equation Modeling: A Discussion and Tutorial

Y. Andre Wang et al.

Summary: This article addresses the confusion surrounding sample size selection for structural equation modeling (SEM) in psychology, highlighting the lack of power analysis for detecting target effects in most current practices. It reports the results of a simulation study on power to detect a target regression coefficient and introduces a user-friendly Shiny app, pwrSEM, for conducting power analysis in SEM.
