Effects of tourism development on economic growth: An empirical study of China based on both static and dynamic spatial Durbin models

Honghong Liu et al.

Summary: This study uses the dynamic spatial Durbin model to examine the direct and spillover effects of tourism development on economic growth, supporting the hypothesis that tourism drives economic growth in China. The significant roles of domestic and inbound tourism in stimulating local economic growth are highlighted, with long-term effects being more substantial than short-term impacts for both types of tourism. However, the spatial spillover effect is limited to domestic tourism and not significant for inbound tourism.

Summary: This article explores the spatial heterogeneity and dynamics of spillover effects of tourism-flow patterns. The findings reveal that in the high-speed train era, the spillover effects of tourism flows from neighboring regions have changed from positive to negative. Additionally, cities with high-speed train services have positive effects on specific cities, while those without high-speed train services have negative effects. The study identifies the important role of the high-speed train service in these changes. Geographically weighted regressions are used to examine the spatial heterogeneity in detail.
