The average environmental efficiency technique and its application to Chinese provincial panel data

Jing Tang et al.

Summary: This study proposes an average environmental efficiency measurement to evaluate the environmental efficiency of Chinese provinces. The results show that most provinces have room for improvement and the eastern region has the best environmental efficiency. Factors such as energy consumption structure, government intervention, and economic openness have a negative impact on regional environmental efficiency.

Carbon emission efficiency of thermal power generation in China: Empirical evidence from the micro-perspective of power plants

Tao Fang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the carbon emission efficiency (CEE) of thermal power generation in China from a micro-perspective. By analyzing data from 42 thermal power plants, the study constructs a multi-dimensional index evaluation system to evaluate CEE. The results show that the distribution of CEE is polarized into two clusters, with higher CEE in Southern China and lower CEE in Central China. The main reasons for low CEE are input redundancies and high carbon emission intensity. The study suggests adjusting resource allocation and input-output structure to improve the sustainable development of power enterprises.

Towards low carbon economy: Performance of electricity generation and emission reduction potential in Africa

Boqiang Lin et al.

Summary: More than two-thirds of electricity in Africa is generated from fossil fuels, which poses a threat to the continent's sustainable growth. Technological progress is the main driver of reducing CO2 emissions, and there is still room for improvement in carbon efficiency. Sub-Saharan African power pools perform well in terms of dynamic carbon emission index but lag in carbon efficiency. Different regional power pools have varying potential for carbon emission reduction.

Summary: This study examines the productivity dynamics of Kenya's hydro and thermal power plants and analyzes the impact of environmental factors on their productivity index changes. The findings indicate that changes in hydro productivity are mainly influenced by technical efficiency change, while productivity improvement in thermal plants is related to technology change.

Measuring the energy production and utilization efficiency of Chinese thermal power industry with the fixed-sum carbon emission constraint

Feng Li et al.

Summary: With the rapid development of the Chinese economy, China has become one of the largest countries in terms of energy consumption and carbon emissions. The Chinese government recently announced its dual carbon policy target, aiming to achieve carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060. The thermal power industry, as a crucial energy sector and source of carbon emissions in China, plays a vital role in meeting energy needs and achieving carbon peak and carbon neutrality. In this study, a two-stage data envelopment analysis approach is proposed to measure and analyze the energy production-utilization efficiency of the Chinese thermal power industry, considering the fixed-sum carbon emission constraint. The empirical analysis focuses on the provincial level from 2015 to 2019, providing insights into the energy production-utilization efficiency of the thermal power industry in China.

Challenges and opportunities for carbon neutrality in China

Zhu Liu et al.

Summary: China has made significant reductions in CO2 emissions, achieving objectives outlined in Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions and Nationally Determined Contributions. However, China still faces challenges in reaching peak CO2 emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality before 2060. Achieving these goals will require increasing non-fossil energy share, deploying negative-emission technologies, promoting low-carbon development regionally, and establishing a nationwide 'green market'.

Sources of inefficient power generation by coal-fired thermal power plants in China: A metafrontier DEA decomposition approach

Shogo Eguchi et al.

Summary: This study examines the efficiency changes and sources of inefficiency in coal-fired thermal power plants in China, finding that large-scale power plants have higher efficiency compared to small-scale ones. Operational inefficiency is the main source of inefficiency in eastern and central China, while the technology gap and equipment differences are the main sources in western China.

Provincial carbon emission performance analysis in China based on a Malmquist data envelopment analysis approach with fixed-sum undesirable outputs

Yongjun Li et al.

Summary: The environmental issue has gained increasing attention in recent years, with environmental performance analysis considered a crucial tool for protecting the environment and promoting sustainability. This paper proposes an alternative Malmquist DEA approach to evaluating carbon emission performance, taking into account fixed-sum undesirable outputs. The approach is applied to assess carbon emission performance in 30 provincial regions in China from 2009 to 2015, providing analytical results and policy suggestions.

A multi factor Malmquist CO2 emission performance indices: Evidence from Sub Saharan African public thermal power plants

Boqiang Lin et al.

Summary: About 70% of Sub Saharan Africa's electricity generation is from fossil fuels, leading to significant impact on climate change. The study found a slight improvement in CO2 emission performance in the region, with a decrease in technical efficiency across all regions. West Africa has the highest technical performance index, while Southern Africa emerged as the technology leader among all regions.
