Sibling conflict during COVID-19 in families with special educational needs and disabilities

Summary: Young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SENDs) and their families have been severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to increased sibling conflict. The study found that during lockdown, young people with SENDs were more likely to be bullied by their siblings, and after lockdown, both perpetration and victimization decreased, but not to the level of the early lockdown period.

Psychosocial and Behavioral Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Children and Adolescents with Autism and Their Families: Overview of the Literature and Initial Data from a Multinational Online Survey

While both autistic and neurotypical children experienced decreases in well-being and increases in anxiety, adaptability was significantly more affected in autistic children and adolescents. The findings highlight the challenges faced by individuals with autism during the pandemic and suggest the need for increased support and intervention.

A Longitudinal and Gender Invariance Analysis of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire Across Ages 3, 5, 7, 11, 14, and 17 in a Large UK-Representative Sample

Summary: Through the Millennium Cohort Study data, we found that the fit of SDQ was poor at age 3 in both males and females, and in males at age 17; however, it fit well at ages 5, 7, 11, and 14 and its scores were measurement invariant up to the residual level across gender. The parent-reported SDQ can be used to estimate developmental trajectories of emotional problems, conduct problems, hyperactivity/inattention, prosociality, and peer problems and their gender differences between the ages of 5 to 14.

Connections During Crisis: Adolescents' Social Dynamics and Mental Health During COVID-19

Summary: During COVID-19, younger adolescents experienced significant decreases in negative and positive interactions with friends, while older adolescents showed significant decreases in negative interactions with friends and significant increases in positive interactions with siblings. Within the family, within-day spillover of positive interactions and person-level association of negative interactions increased during COVID-19, whereas within-day spillover of positive interactions between family and friends decreased. A dramatic increase in depressive symptoms was found, with more negative interactions and fewer positive interactions with family members associated with changes in depressive symptoms.
