Where language meets attention: How contingent interactions promote learning

Lillian R. Masek et al.

Summary: The contingent interactions between caregivers and infants are crucial for language learning, with three pathways proposed for how they promote language skills: temporal, semantic, and pragmatic. Attention facilitates interactions, helping infants understand communicative intent, while interactions promote attention, allowing infants to better learn language. This new framework suggests that interactions operate through domain-general skills, establishing a broader foundation for learning.

Clinically depressed and typically developing mother-infant dyads: Domain base rates and correspondences, relationship contingencies and attunement

Marc H. Bornstein et al.

Summary: Maternal depression is associated with negative outcomes in infants due to less didactic parenting practices, reduced contingencies, and decreased attunement in interactions with their infants. Infants of clinically depressed mothers also showed lower rates of non-distress vocalization compared to infants of non-depressed mothers.

Beyond talk: Contributions of quantity and quality of communication to language success across socioeconomic strata

Lillian R. Masek et al.

Summary: Children from low-SES households hear fewer words compared to their higher-SES peers, with the quality of caregiver-toddler interaction being a more important predictor of language development than the quantity of talk. This effect was more pronounced in high-INR group compared to the middle-INR group, suggesting that the impact of interaction quality on language outcomes may not be universal across different income levels.
