Forecasting global stock market volatilities in an uncertain world

Zhao-Chen Li et al.

Summary: We examine the relationship between uncertainty and global stock market volatilities using high-frequency data. Our findings show that uncertainty contains valuable information beyond volatility and has a strong impact on stock market volatility. Using various uncertainty measures, we find that the CBOE volatility index (VIX) is the most accurate in point forecasting, while the financial stress index (FSI) performs best in directional forecasting. Additionally, the predictive power of VIX significantly improved after the COVID-19 outbreak, and a VIX-based portfolio strategy allows mean-variance investors to achieve higher returns. Two key empirical properties of VIX are its ability to effectively reduce forecast variance and its superior performance compared to other uncertainty forecasts. Overall, our study emphasizes the importance of considering uncertainty when analyzing expected stock market volatility.

Projected long-term climate trends reveal the critical role of vapor pressure deficit for soybean yields in the US Midwest

Wenguang Sun et al.

Summary: Extreme climate events including heat waves and droughts are projected to become more frequent under future climate change conditions. However, the mechanisms between soybean yields and climate factors, specifically involving variable rainfall and high heat episodes, are still unclear, particularly with respect to spatial trends in the United States (US) Midwest.

Southern oscillation: Great value of its trends for forecasting crude oil spot price volatility

Yanran Hong et al.

Summary: An increasing number of studies have confirmed the impact of climate change on commodity spot markets, and this study focuses on crude oil spot markets. By using the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI), which determines the weather and climate of different areas, the researchers found that including the SOI trend in the model improves the accuracy of in-sample estimation and outperforms other models in out-of-sample prediction. This suggests that climate change trends can provide economic value for market participants in crude oil spot markets.

Do extreme shocks help forecast oil price volatility? The augmented GARCH-MIDAS approach

Lu Wang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a weighted autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (ARCH) model in the framework of mixed data sampling (MIDAS) augmented to include the impacts of extreme shocks on oil price volatility. The results show that extreme shocks induce additional volatility in crude oil, and the proposed model, EGARCH-MIDAS-ES, fits the crude oil volatility best. Additionally, robustness tests confirm that the augmented volatility models outperform the conventional GARCH-MIDAS model in terms of prediction accuracy and economic performance. Furthermore, the study finds that negative extreme shocks have a larger effect on volatility compared to positive extreme shocks of the same magnitude.

Forecasting the volatility of agricultural commodity futures: The role of co-volatility and oil volatility

Hardik A. Marfatia et al.

Summary: The study uses MHAR models to predict the realized volatilities of agricultural commodity futures in China, with the model incorporating a co-volatility error structure showing superior performance in forecasting. The forecasting accuracy improves as the forecast horizon increases for all commodities, with medium-term forecasts yielding the highest economic value.

How macro-variables drive crude oil volatility? Perspective from the STL-based iterated combination method

Li Zhang et al.

Summary: This article explores the prediction accuracy of crude oil price volatility using macro variables based on the GARCH-MIDAS framework. The study introduces an STL decomposition and iterated combination approach, finding that the iterated combination forecasts outperform the standard ones. Moreover, the article suggests that the new approach can bring more certainty-equivalent returns in asset allocation.

Forecasting crude oil volatility with geopolitical risk: Do time-varying switching probabilities play a role?

Lu Wang et al.

Summary: This study uses an asymmetric time-varying transition probability Markov regime switching (AS-TVTP-MS) GARCH model to investigate the predictive ability of geopolitical risk on crude oil volatility. The findings suggest that negative shocks of geopolitical risk have a greater impact on switching probabilities than positive shocks, and the model containing the geopolitical risk index outperforms others in predictive performance, indicating that considering geopolitical risk information and time-varying regime switching together leads to superior predictions.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of five uncertainty indices on US natural gas futures volatility forecasting within the GARCH-MIDAS framework. The in-sample results show that most uncertainty indices have a significant effect on natural gas futures volatility, with geopolitical risk and equity market volatility indices containing the most useful information. Out-of-sample predictions demonstrate that the EMV index exhibits superior predictive ability during certain special periods, such as post-crisis, expansions, and low volatility.
