Consumer-lending discrimination in the FinTech Era *

Robert Bartlett et al.

Summary: U.S. fair-lending law prohibits lenders from making credit determinations that disparately affect minority borrowers based on characteristics unrelated to creditworthiness. Research shows that risk-equivalent Lat-inx/Black borrowers pay significantly higher interest rates in high-minority-share neighborhoods, resulting in over $450 million yearly loss for minority borrowers. FinTech lenders' rate disparities were similar to non-Fintech lenders for GSE mortgages, but lower for FHA mortgages issued in 2009-2015 and FHA refi mortgages issued in 2018-2019.

Borrow low, lend high: Credit arbitrage by sophisticated investors

Geran Tian et al.

Summary: Investors arbitrage by borrowing and lending simultaneously on Renrendai to earn the interest rate spread. They have larger portfolios and diversify default risk by lending smaller amounts to many borrowers. The platform's reform eliminates arbitrage opportunities, highlighting the need for arbitrageurs to closely monitor platform changes.

How to govern the big data discriminatory pricing behavior in the platform service supply chain? An examination with a three-party evolutionary game model

Weihua Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the strategies of the service platform, government, and consumers, building a three-party evolutionary game model and proposing a governance mechanism to prevent the use of BDDP on service platforms. The conclusions highlight the varying responses of governments to supervise platforms based on their risk aversion and the incentives for both the platform and consumers in the absence of long-term government supervision.

Discriminatory Pricing of Over-the-Counter Derivatives

Harald Hau et al.

Summary: Based on new regulatory data, it is shown that price discrimination against nonfinancial clients exists in the foreign exchange derivatives market. Transaction costs for clients vary systematically with their level of sophistication. However, this discrimination is eliminated when clients trade electronically on multidealer platforms. Less sophisticated clients incur additional costs when trading with their relationship bank and in fast-moving markets, but only for bilaterally negotiated contracts.
