Assessing Cutoff Values of SEM Fit Indices: Advantages of the Unbiased SRMR Index and Its Cutoff Criterion Based on Communality

Carmen Ximenez et al.

Summary: The behavior of fit indices in CFA models depends on factors such as model size, sample size, and measurement quality. Biased estimators of fit indices result in unstable behavior with changing sample size, making it difficult to establish cutoff values. Unbiased estimators, on the other hand, match the behavior of population parameters and depend on the average R-2 of observed variables and model size.

The Perfect Storm: A Developmental-Sociocultural Framework for the Role of Social Media in Adolescent Girls' Body Image Concerns and Mental Health

Sophia Choukas-Bradley et al.

Summary: This theoretical review paper provides a developmental-sociocultural framework to understand the role of social media in adolescent girls' body image concerns, depressive symptoms, and disordered eating. The paper proposes that features of social media, adolescent developmental factors, and sociocultural gender socialization processes intersect to exacerbate girls' body image concerns. The paper argues that body image concerns may be a key mechanism linking adolescent girls' social media use to their mental health.

Longitudinal associations between appearance-related social media consciousness and adolescents' depressive symptoms

Anne J. Maheux et al.

Summary: Frequent social media use among adolescents is associated with depressive symptoms. Subjective social media experiences, such as appearance-related social media consciousness (ASMC), may play a more important role than mere frequency of use. This study found that baseline ASMC was associated with higher depressive symptoms one year later, even when controlling for time spent on social media. The findings suggest that concerns about physical appearance on social media are important in the development of depressive symptoms among adolescents.

I (Don't) Respect My Body: Investigating the Role of Mass Media Use and Self-Objectification on Adolescents' Positive Body Image in a Cross-National Study

Kathrin Karsay et al.

Summary: This cross-national survey examined the relationship between mass media use, self-objectification, and positive body image among boys and girls in Austria, Belgium, Spain, and South Korea. The study found that self-objectification acts as a significant mediating mechanism in the association between media use and positive body image. Results showed that the impact of different types of media on adolescents' body image is complex and can be both positive and negative.
