Surveillance allows us to identify and monitor potentially zoonotic strains. A tracheal swab taken from a pelican on a Peruvian beach tested positive for H5N1 (clade 2.3.4.4b) using the Oxford Nanopore's MinION platform. The near-complete genome sequence of strain VFAR-140 will provide insights into avian influenza epidemiology and spread.
