How does China's industrial wastewater shadow price evolve? The perspective of spatiotemporal characteristics and differences decomposition

Jixin Cheng et al.

Summary: This study estimates the shadow price of China's urban industrial wastewater (IWSP) using the non-parametric dual evaluation linear analysis framework, and analyzes its spatiotemporal characteristics and sources of differences. The results show an increasing trend of China's urban IWSP, indicating the significant results and increasing difficulty of emission reduction policies. There are differences among regions and variations in green production processes. IWSP gradually diverges, with regions with lower average shadow prices converging faster. The overall difference of IWSP and intra/inter-regional differences decrease, with the contribution rate of intensity of transvariation becoming the main reason for the imbalanced distribution of IWSP.

Energy endowment, environmental regulation, and energy efficiency: Evidence from China

Ying Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates energy efficiency across provincial regions in China and finds varying levels of efficiency among different areas, as well as confirms the presence of a resource curse at the national level. Additionally, market-based environmental regulations have a positive moderating effect on the relationship between energy endowment and energy efficiency, while command-and-control environmental regulations do not have a significant effect.

Spatial and temporal changes of the ecological footprint of China's resource-based cities in the process of urbanization

Jing Wu et al.

Summary: The development of resource-based cities in China is facing the dual pressures of negative externalities and urbanization, leading to ecological deficits at both national and regional levels. The ecological deficits are mainly caused by insufficient biological capacity at the national scale, while at the regional level, they are closely related to local natural and social conditions as well as continued urbanization.

The way to break the resource curse: New evidence from China

Keyu Luo et al.

Summary: Although the resource curse and its impact on environmental sustainability have received much attention, there is still a lack of research on the influence of resource dependence in breaking the resource curse. This study focuses on the role of resource dependence on carbon dioxide emissions in 250 peripheral cities in China from 2000 to 2018. The results show that resource dependence has significantly accelerated CO2 emissions and the resource curse still persists at the prefecture level. However, technological innovation factors such as high-speed rail and science and technology investment have a negative moderating effect on the relationship between resource dependence and CO2 emissions, suggesting that effective policy suggestions can mitigate the resource curse.

The internal-structural effects of different types of environmental regulations on China's green total-factor productivity

Ying Tian et al.

Summary: By applying three-hierarchy meta-frontier DEA and panel data, this study examined the internal-structural effects of different types of environmental regulations on China's green total-factor productivity (GTFP). The results show distinct non-linear relationships between different types of environmental regulations and the internal factors of GTFP, with varying effects on technological innovation, industrial structure, regional balance development, scale, and resource allocation efficiency.

Impact of environmental investment and resource endowment on regional energy efficiency: evidence from the Yangtze River Economic Belt, China

Pucha Wang et al.

Summary: Based on provincial panel data from 2006 to 2017 in the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB), this study examined the impact of resource endowment and environmental investment on energy efficiency. Results showed a negative correlation between resource endowment and energy efficiency, while current and lagged environmental investment had positive effects on energy efficiency. Additionally, environmental investment could effectively mitigate the negative impact of resource endowment on energy efficiency.

Summary: This study evaluated the green total-factor productivity (GTFP) of 163 countries over the period of 1990-2017, showing significant regional and dynamic disparities in GTFP performance. High-income countries had the highest GTFP, while 25 countries experienced declines, mainly due to a widening technological gap.

Dynamic spatial analysis of NO2 pollution over China: Satellite observations and spatial convergence models

Yuanzheng Cui et al.

Summary: The research reveals that the differences in NO2 concentrations among different Chinese cities widened from 2005 to 2011, but have been narrowing since 2013. The convergence of NO2 pollution across cities heavily depends on the improvements in cities with high levels of NO2 concentrations, and the convergence speed is faster in winter than in summer.

Measurement and convergence of transportation industry total factor energy efficiency in China

Pinhong Zeng et al.

Summary: This paper constructed an epsilon-based measure model to measure the total factor energy efficiency of the transportation industry in 30 Chinese provinces. It found significant provincial and regional differences in TITFEE. The results also showed that China's TITFEEs followed the trend of absolute beta convergence, with the central region converging at the fastest pace.

Industrial SO2 technical efficiency, reduction potential and technology heterogeneities of China's prefecture-level cities: A multi-hierarchy meta-frontier parametric approach

Jun Yang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a multi-hierarchy meta-frontier parametric approach to evaluate the industrial SO2 technical efficiency of China's cities. The study finds that most cities have significantly improved their STE values, especially those in central and western China. By optimizing industrial structure and promoting market-oriented reforms, China's industrial SO2 emissions could be reduced.

Energy endowment, industrial structure upgrading, and CO2 emissions in China: Revisiting resource curse in the context of carbon emissions

Linfei Wu et al.

Summary: The green transformation of energy-rich areas is crucial for low-carbon sustainable development. The study finds that energy endowment and industrial structure have significant impacts on carbon emissions, indicating the existence of a "resource curse." Upgrading industrial production factors and industrial level can help reduce carbon emissions effectively.

Summary: This study revealed the spatial distribution changes of nitrogen oxides emissions from motor vehicles in China during 2006-2015, showing significant increasing trends in total NOV and NOV proportion. NOV per capita and per vehicle showed convergence trends after 2012 and during the entire sample period, respectively. Technological progress could play a decisive role in reducing NOV per vehicle.
