Dispossession as depotentiation

Matthew Wilhelm-Solomon

Summary: This paper proposes a theory of urban dispossession as depotentiation, aiming to complement and critique Harvey's concept of accumulation by dispossession, and to contribute to the conceptual developments on eviction. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in inner-city Johannesburg, it reveals the precarious living conditions of thousands of residents in a state of extreme instability and marginalization.

Victim, broker, activist, fixer: Surviving dispossession in working class Lahore

Ammara Maqsood et al.

Summary: Recent debates in urban geography and anthropology have called for a reevaluation of 'marginal' groups, highlighting their close connection to state power and their potential to offer insights into alternative modes of dwelling, endurance, and political change. This study in Lahore, Pakistan from 2015 to 2017 examines how those on the urban margins navigate connections to centers of power when faced with dispossession, revealing the unique ways in which survival in such conditions depends on adaptability and shifting roles. Though embracing shifting roles in conceptualizations of the political in the Global South presents potential, caution is advised against reading too much into these possibilities as they may not completely override the challenges of precarity.

From eviction to evicting: Rethinking the technologies, lives and power sustaining displacement

Alexander Baker

Summary: There has been a shift in focus towards the subjective experience and sustaining practices of eviction, away from causes and effects. This change emphasizes viewing eviction as a set of material technologies and practices that sustain displacement. Research into lived durations of eviction, evicting technologies, and eviction enforcement agencies opens up new conceptual and political fields of intervention.
