Why food insecurity persists in sub-Saharan Africa: A review of existing evidence

Summary: This article discusses the underperformance of agricultural production and irrigation schemes in sub-Saharan Africa and their contribution to high levels of food insecurity. It highlights the legacy of colonial agricultural systems, export-oriented policies, and the neglect of research and investment in post-independence agricultural policies. The article argues for the need to extract African nations from debt and to develop profitable farming that is connected to domestic supply chains and market signals.
