Mainstreaming Community Energy: Is the Renewable Energy Directive a Driver for Renewable Energy Communities in Germany and Italy?

Summary: This article examines the transposition and creation of enabling frameworks for renewable energy communities (RECs) in Germany and Italy, comparing their respective situations. The study finds that although community energy development is more advanced in Germany, the transposition of the RED II provisions has been slow. On the other hand, Italy has made dynamic progress in transposing RED II and has seen continuous growth of REC initiatives. However, both countries need structural adjustments of their governance systems and should pay attention to multi-level governance and vertical policy coordination in order to achieve widespread adoption of RECs.

Regional capacity to govern the energy transition: The case of two Dutch energy regions

Summary: In this study, we analyze how interactions between governing bodies influence the capacity of Dutch energy regions to govern the energy transition. The current governance approach is hindered by unclear roles and responsibilities, dependence on traditional hierarchical structures, and high transaction costs. These negative interactions complicate strategic alignment and the creation of opportunity contexts, thereby impeding capacity development in the regional energy transition.

Summary: This paper uses an assemblage theoretical approach to critically analyze Norwegian land-based wind power policies, exploring the influences and resistances in energy transition policies. Wind power policies are mainly shaped by energy authorities, developers, and interest organizations, while being challenged by the voices of local governments, environmental organizations, and concerned citizens. Increased conflicts and public debates are prompting national politicians to reassess wind power policies and consider its role in local, national, and global energy transitions.

Creating space for wind energy in a polycentric governance setting

Summary: This article discusses how to identify appropriate space for wind power. It analyzes how governance processes evolve in a polycentric setting and with what consequences. Results demonstrate that wind power governance is a complex, multi-element endeavor with strengths and weaknesses. This can be attributed to six systemic issues in polycentric governance. While polycentric governance can support finding locations for wind power, it needs to be deliberately addressed.

Who goes electric? The anatomy of electric car ownership in Norway

Summary: This study examines the ownership of electric cars in Norway, finding that socioeconomic factors play a significant role in predicting car ownership patterns. While early BEV owners were distinct from other car owners, they have become more similar over time.
