Community eco-tourism in rural Peru: Resilience and adaptive capacities to the Covid-19 pandemic and climate change

Edwin Gabriel-Campos et al.

Summary: This study examines community responses and resilience to COVID-19 and climate change in the case of Quebrada Verde, a rural community in Peru. The community's preparedness is unbalanced towards the two threats, with more tools developed for coping with COVID-19 than climate change. Efforts are needed to strengthen resilience towards climate change and to bridge the gap in relationships with other local organizations in order to sustain the wider social network and enhance risk management strategies.

A review of trends and drivers of greenhouse gas emissions by sector from 1990 to 2018

William F. Lamb et al.

Summary: Global greenhouse gas emissions from five economic sectors show limited progress in reducing emissions. Decarbonization in energy systems is observed in Europe and North America, while fossil-based energy systems continue to expand in rapidly industrializing regions. Strong demand in Asia drives emissions growth in industry, buildings, and transport sectors, while agricultural expansion leads to emissions increases in tropical forest regions.

The impacts of the tourism sector on the eco-efficiency of the Latin American and Caribbean countries

Daniela Castilho et al.

Summary: This study examined the impacts of the tourism sector on the overall eco-efficiency of 22 Latin America and Caribbean countries. The results showed that tourism arrivals decrease eco-efficiency in both the short- and long-run, while tourism capital investment and direct tourism contribution to employment promote eco-efficiency in the long-run. Therefore, policymakers should encourage investments in sustainable tourism projects and productive employment while respecting the carrying capacity of these destinations.
