Progress in Organosolv and Steam Explosion Pretreatments of Oil Palm Fibers for Biomacromolecules Extraction

Nagila F. Souza et al.

Summary: Steam explosion combined with acetosolv or ethanosolv pulping as pretreatments show promising effects on extracting cellulose nanocrystals and lignin from oil palm fibers, facilitating the separation between lignin and polysaccharides. The optimized conditions obtained through central composite design result in high purity lignin and cellulose nanocrystals with high crystallinity. Acetosolv delignification is more effective than ethanosolv in extracting insoluble lignin.

Biomass valorization by integrating ultrasonication and deep eutectic solvents: Delignification, cellulose digestibility and solvent reuse

Kiat Moon Lee et al.

Summary: Researchers have shown interest in the valorization of biomass for biofuels production, particularly oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB). By using a combination of deep eutectic solvent (DES) and ultrasonication, the pretreatment of OPEFB resulted in improved cellulose digestibility, reduced lignin content, and biomass crystallinity. The ultrasound-assisted DES pretreatment exhibited better performance compared to other methods and showed the potential for effective biomass conversion to sugars.
