Land Use and Land Cover in Tropical Forest: Global Research

Andres Velastegui-Montoya et al.

Summary: Tropical ecosystems are important for the environment, providing various ecosystem services. Understanding land use and land cover change in tropical forests helps to address deforestation, degradation, erosion, desertification, and biodiversity loss. The study found a significant increase in research on land use and land cover, involving 74 countries, and identified 14 themes and seven research areas. Future research should consider the relationship between sustainable development goals and land use and cover in tropical forests, as well as the environmental impacts of economic activities.

Spatiotemporal land use and cover changes across agroecologies and slope gradients using geospatial technologies in Zoa watershed, Southwest Ethiopia

Ginjo Gitima et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the spatio-temporal dynamics of land use/land cover (LULC) and their drivers in the Zoa watershed of Omo-Gibe basin, Southwest Ethiopia. The results revealed that inappropriate land use planning and the expansion of traditional agricultural practices have led to soil erosion and ecological changes. Farmland has increased significantly, while shrubland and grassland have declined. The expansion of farmland towards steep slopes may exacerbate soil degradation. Rapid population growth and demand for agricultural land are major drivers of LULC dynamics. Effective management strategies through appropriate land use planning are needed to address the adverse effects of LULC dynamics.

Changes in ecosystem service values strongly influenced by human activities in contrasting agro-ecological environments

Mulatu Liyew Berihun et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of human activity driven land-use/land-cover changes on ecosystem service values over a period of 1982-2016/17 in different agro-ecological environments in the Upper Blue Nile basin of Ethiopia. Results showed that the expansion of cultivated land at the expense of natural vegetation severely reduced ecosystem service values, with the major contributor being the reduction in natural forest area.

Assessment of the linkages between ecosystem service provision and land use/land cover change in Fincha watershed, North-Western Ethiopia

Terefe Tolessa et al.

Summary: The study analyzed land use/land cover changes and their impacts on ecosystem services in the Fincha watershed over a period of three decades, identifying increases in cultivated land, water bodies, and sugar cane plantations, while decreases were seen in wetlands, forest land, and bare land. The competition and tradeoffs between subsistence farming and large-scale government projects in land use were found to influence the optimization of natural capital value.

Dynamics and drivers of land cover change in the Afroalpine vegetation belt: Abune Yosef mountain range, Northern Ethiopia

Kflay Gebrehiwot et al.

Summary: This study quantifies LULC change in the Abune Yosef mountain range, revealing declines in Afroalpine grassland, grazing land, and shrubland, while increases were observed in agricultural land, barren land, plantation forests, and urban settlements. The main drivers identified were increased human population pressure, temperature and precipitation variability, and the absence of land use policy.

The effect of land use/land cover change on ecosystem services values of Jibat forest landscape, Ethiopia

Terefe Tolessa Muleta et al.

Summary: This study found that a total of US$ 22.78 million of ecosystem services was reduced due to land use changes from 1973 to 2015. Local communities recognized forests' ecosystem services as one of the most important environmental benefits they receive.
