Spatiotemporal distribution of canopy litter and nutrient resorption in a chronosequence of different development stages of Cunninghamia lanceolata in southeast China

Lili Zhou et al.

Summary: The study highlights the importance of canopy litter in nutrient conservation and recycling in Chinese fir plantations. The distribution and dynamics of canopy litter mass and nutrient resorption vary with stand age. Winter is the season with the highest mass of canopy litter.

Effects of stand age on tree biomass partitioning and allometric equations in Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) plantations

Wenhua Xiang et al.

Summary: The study found that stand age significantly impacts allometric models, with branches and leaves being more sensitive to the environment and most affected by stand age. Stand age-specific allometric equations fit well using DBH and the combined form (DBH*H^2) as predictor variables, and including stand age as a complementary variable improved the fit of generalized allometric equations.

Ecosystem service multifunctionality of Chinese fir plantations differing in stand age and implications for sustainable management

Yelin Zeng et al.

Summary: Establishing forest plantations is an important solution to the growing conflict between human population growth and the need to protect natural forests, as they offer multiple ecosystem services. However, sustainable management of plantations is challenging due to trade-offs between different services and conflicts between stakeholders. This study quantified 15 ES indicators in Chinese fir plantations and explored ES-multifunctionality under different management scenarios. Results showed pronounced effects of stand age on individual ESs and ES-multifunctionality, with greater impacts on provisioning services and trade-offs between different types of services. Increasing plantation age led to higher multifunctionality values, but the patterns differed among scenarios. Management recommendations are proposed to minimize conflicts between stakeholders.
