Waste biomass based potential bioadsorbent for lead removal from simulated wastewater

Dan Bahadur Pal et al.

Summary: This study investigated the removal of lead from simulated wastewater using cost-effective bio-adsorbents made from mango seed shell with kernel (M) and jamun seed shell with kernel (JP). The optimal adsorption conditions were determined to be a speed of 500 rpm, a dosage of 60 mg, a pH of 6.5, and a contact time of 120 min. The bio-adsorbents exhibited adsorption capacities of around 39.15 mg/g for M and 20.28 mg/g for JP, with maximum lead removal efficiencies of 94.85% and 92.78%, respectively. The Freundlich model and pseudo-first order reaction kinetic model were found to best fit the regression coefficient for both bio-adsorbents.

Hierarchical ternary ZnCoFe layered double hydroxide as efficient adsorbent and catalyst for methanol electrooxidation

E. E. Abdel-Hady et al.

Summary: Layered double hydroxide (LDH) with a molar ratio of Zn-Co-Fe 2:2:1 was synthesized as a strong adsorbent for the removal of cationic methylene blue (MB) from wastewater. The study found that Zn-Co-Fe/LDH exhibited high adsorption capacity for MB, and the adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir and Freundlich models. Thermodynamic parameters of the adsorption process were investigated, indicating that the adsorption was exothermic and non-spontaneous. Furthermore, Zn-Co-Fe/LDH/MB after calcination showed excellent performance as a catalyst in direct methanol fuel cells.

A Review on Occurrence and Spread of Antibiotic Resistance in Wastewaters and in Wastewater Treatment Plants: Mechanisms and Perspectives

Cansu Uluseker et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the sources, spread, and removal mechanisms of antibiotic resistance genes in microbial communities of wastewaters, treatment plants, and downstream recipients. The misuse of antibiotics has led to the development and spread of antibiotic resistance worldwide, with AR being transferred amongst bacteria via gene transfer. Wastewater treatment plants have diverse microorganism communities that provide a favorable environment for AR spread. Advanced treatment methods like UV, ozonation, and oxidation are more effective in removing ARGs and ARB than conventional activated sludge treatment. Further research is needed to develop reliable mathematical models to study the dynamics and reduction of AR in WWTPs.
