Diagnostic detection of intended bacteria associated with respiratory tract infections among Kelantanese Malaysian Hajj pilgrims by a ready-to-use, thermostable multiplex PCR assay

Summary: This study conducted a diagnostic screening of bacterial respiratory tract infections (RTIs) among Malaysian Hajj pilgrims using a newly developed PCR assay. The results showed that H. influenzae was the predominant bacterium in the pilgrims' sputum samples. The multiplex PCR assay demonstrated advantages of simplicity, speed, and reliability compared to sputum culture, particularly during the Hajj pilgrimage.

Understanding spiritual journey to hajj: Ghana and Uzbekistan perspectives

Summary: This study aims to explore the understanding, experience, and challenges of Hajj among pilgrims from Ghana and Uzbekistan. Findings show that the philosophy of Hajj as a religious obligation is common among Muslim pilgrims from both countries. However, there are differences in the social status attached to Hajj in Ghanaian society and the role of Uzbekistan pilgrims as spiritual role models in their communities.

Teachers' agency and online education in times of crisis

Summary: This study examines the agency and emergency responses of academic teachers during the COVID-19 crisis, accelerated by the pandemic-related lockdown. Through a survey of university teachers in Norway, it was found that teachers attempted to create conducive learning environments and solve problems with self-help and support, despite challenges with digital competence and institutional support. Latent profile and qualitative analyses revealed different clusters of teacher responses, ranging from resistance to transformation of teaching practices.

Prevalence of Diabetes and Hypertension among Hajj Pilgrims: A Systematic Review

Summary: The annual Hajj mass gathering is attended by over two million Muslims, many of whom are elderly and have underlying health conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. A systematic review of literature found that the prevalence rates of diabetes and hypertension among Hajj pilgrims were 5.0% and 12.2% respectively. The event presents an opportunity to address these health issues within the participating countries by identifying undiagnosed cases and optimizing patient management.

Human-Survey Interaction (HSI): A Study on Integrity of Human Data Collectors in a Mass-Scale Hajj Pilgrimage Survey

Summary: This study conducted a large-scale data collection survey on Hajj/Umrah pilgrims and explored the integrity of data collectors. The research found that religious and socio-geographical factors impact the data collection process, and collaborative participation of expert reviewers is crucial for scrutinizing the integrity of data collectors. Additionally, computing techniques such as conflict analysis and learning-based analysis were able to identify a high percentage of unreliable data collectors, but human involvement is still necessary for conclusive determination of integrity.

The salience of stakeholders in religious tourism: A case study of the Dajia Mazu pilgrimage

Summary: This study assesses the stakeholder salience of the Dajia Mazu pilgrimage in Taiwan, showing that temples, pilgrims, and host communities are more important stakeholders. Among the 18 contributions of stakeholders, pilgrims' engagement and organizing temple management are highlighted as crucial factors. Organizers and administrators should prioritize these key stakeholders to successfully manage pilgrimages and religious tourism.
