Sustainable bioelectrochemical systems for bioenergy generation via waste treatment from petroleum industries

Sanath Kondaveeti et al.

Summary: Petroleum industries generate large amounts of wastewater containing high concentrations of recalcitrant pollutants. Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) have been widely used to treat these wastewaters while simultaneously generating bioelectricity and value-added chemicals. This review discusses the applications of BESs in the treatment of petroleum wastewater and compares them with other biological processes.

Simultaneous bioremediation of Disperse orange-2RL Azo dye and fatty acids production by Scenedesmus obliquus cultured under mixotrophic and heterotrophic conditions

Ragaa A. Hamouda et al.

Summary: This study explored the potential growth of green microalgae under mixotrophic and heterotrophic conditions using a dye as a carbon source. The results showed that green microalgae can efficiently remove the dye and produce high concentrations of oleic acid, making it suitable for biodiesel production. Heterotrophic cultivation is more cost-effective and easier to set up and maintain compared to mixotrophic cultivation.

Mixotrophic Growth of Chlorella sorokiniana on Acetate and Butyrate: Interplay Between Substrate, C:N Ratio and pH

Julien Lacroux et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of acetate or butyrate concentration on biomass growth rates and yields in microalgae cultivation on waste dark fermentation effluents. While adjusting initial pH can mitigate VFA inhibition, VFA concentration strongly affects biomass yields. High organic acid concentration may reduce carbon fixation by autotrophy, leading to decreased yields.
