Predictors of mortality in nonagenarians undergoing abdominal aortic aneurysm repair: Analysis of the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program dataset

Mohineesh Kumar et al.

Summary: This study used the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program dataset to identify the predictors of 30-day mortality for nonagenarians undergoing endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR) or open surgical repair (OSR). The results showed that nonagenarians had an acceptable risk of 30-day mortality with EVAR in elective and emergent cases. Factors such as dependent status, higher ASA classification, emergent repair, and OSR were associated with higher mortality. These preoperative risk factors could help identify the best surgical candidates.

Mortality after abdominal emergency surgery in nonagenarians

Helene Perregaard et al.

Summary: The study found that the most common reason for emergency abdominal surgery in nonagenarians was intestinal obstruction, with a mortality rate of 34% after 30 days and 54% after 1 year. Among patients developing serious complications, the mortality rate after 30 days was as high as 80%.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate perioperative outcomes associated with heart failure (HF) in patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery, showing that HF patients had a higher perioperative mortality rate, especially those with acute HF facing the greatest risk of death.
