Forecasting quantities of critical raw materials in obsolete feature and smart phones in Greece: A path to circular economy

Eleni Kastanaki et al.

Summary: Mobile phone waste is increasing due to the short lifetime and high ownership. This study estimates the quantities of obsolete mobile phones in Greece from 1995 to 2035 and identifies the Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) and Precious Metals (PMs) embedded in them. The findings suggest that efficient recycling of obsolete phones can meet the demand for key metals in new smartphones for more than a decade, highlighting the importance of managing valuable e-waste.

An integrated life cycle multi-objective optimization model for health-environment-economic nexus in food waste management sector

Zuchao Lin et al.

Summary: Food waste is a global issue, and this study proposes an integrated model combining life cycle assessment and multi-objective mathematical optimization to evaluate the impacts of different food waste management technologies and identify the optimal configuration for Malaysia. Anaerobic digestion for electricity generation is found to be the most favorable option, with significant reductions in human health and ecosystem impacts compared to open landfill.

Household practices regarding e-waste management: A case study from Brazil

Jose Francisco de Oliveira Neto et al.

Summary: This paper presents a survey on the knowledge, habits, attitudes, and practices of Brazilian families regarding e-waste management. The study examines the factors associated with household e-waste behaviors and finds that a majority of households do not properly segregate and dispose of e-waste. However, families show a basic understanding of the e-waste problem and demonstrate positive motivation towards e-waste management practices. The survey also highlights a positive intention among families to purchase used and manufactured products, indicating a potential future market for these products. Based on the findings, the paper suggests that improving awareness of source separation and providing collection infrastructure are crucial for effective e-waste management in the analyzed area.

E-waste recycling behaviour: An integration of recycling habits into the theory of planned behaviour

Mohamed Aboelmaged

Summary: This study found that recycling habits and perceived attitudes are strong predictors of young consumers' e-waste recycling intention in an emerging economy context. Contrary to expectations, constructs involving subjective norms and behavioral control in the theory of planned behavior have no significant influence on young consumers' e-waste recycling intention.

A Content Review of Life Cycle Assessment of Nanomaterials: Current Practices, Challenges, and Future Prospects

Nurul Umairah M. Nizam et al.

Summary: This paper provides a comprehensive review of 71 previous studies on the life cycle assessment of nanomaterials from 2001 to 2020, highlighting the lack of comprehensive LCA studies on the environmental impacts of NMs until end-of-life stages in most previous research. Recommendations for future studies include reporting more detailed and transparent data, considering environmental impacts and potential risks throughout the life cycle of NMs, adopting a transparent characterization model, and conducting toxicity, uncertainty, and sensitivity assessments to analyze exposure pathways further. The findings of this study contribute towards future research on LCA NMs, especially considering the limited understanding of mechanisms and pathways involved in the release of NMs into the environment.
