An assessment of the efficacy of biochar and zero-valent iron nanoparticles in reducing lead toxicity in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Muhammad Nauman Mahamood et al.

Summary: Soil heavy metal contamination is a growing problem due to human activities, and lead (Pb) is a well-known human carcinogen that poses a serious threat to food security. In this study, the effects of biochar (BC), zero-valent iron nanoparticles (n-ZVI), and zero-valent iron nanoparticles biochar composite (n-ZVI-BC) on controlling Pb mobility and bioaccumulation in wheat were investigated. The results showed that the application of n-ZVI-BC significantly improved wheat growth and reduced the distribution of Pb in wheat tissues. Furthermore, n-ZVI-BC amendment increased the activity of antioxidant enzymes and decreased oxidative stress in wheat plants. This study provides valuable insights for the remediation of Pb toxicity in wheat and suggests that n-ZVI-BC is a promising and cost-effective technique for mitigating Pb toxicity in crops and reclaiming Pb-polluted soils.

Biogenic silver nanoparticles as antifungal agents

Javier Mussin et al.

Summary: In recent years, the increase in multidrug-resistant fungal strains and limited availability of antifungal agents has led to a growing interest in the development of new antifungal agents. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have proven antifungal activity and are being considered for the treatment of fungal infections. Biogenic synthesis is becoming a preferred method due to its environmentally friendly nature, and there is a need to compare the antifungal activity of different biogenic AgNPs and understand the mechanisms of action and resistance of fungi to AgNPs. The toxicity of biogenic AgNPs in human and veterinary medicine is also analyzed.
