Commercially Developed Tests of Reading Comprehension: Gold Standard or Fool's Gold?

Nathan H. Clemens et al.

Summary: The text discusses the importance of researcher-made tests in reading comprehension interventions and argues that commercial tests do not fully evaluate the multidimensionality of comprehension interventions. The authors suggest reconsidering the use of commercial tests and advocate for the supplemental use of researcher-made tests in program evaluation.

Understanding the Dynamics of Dosage Response: A Nonlinear Meta-Analysis of Recent Reading Interventions

Garrett J. Roberts et al.

Summary: Researchers found a nonlinear association between reading dosage and outcomes for Grade K-3 students with reading difficulties, with an optimal dosage identified. Additionally, there is a different relationship between 1:1 instruction and fluency outcomes.

A Meta-Analytic Review of Cognition and Reading Difficulties: Individual Differences, Moderation, and Language Mediation Mechanisms

Peng Peng et al.

Summary: This study, based on a large amount of data, found that reading difficulties are related to a comprehensive set of cognitive deficits, but there are large individual differences among individuals with RD on most cognitive skills. Executive function and visuospatial skills are uniquely related to RD. A comprehensive cognitive evaluation may provide more accurate information for individualized instruction for individuals with RD.

Adjunctive Psychotherapy for Bipolar Disorder A Systematic Review and Component Network Meta-analysis

David J. Miklowitz et al.

Summary: The study suggests that family, cognitive behavioral, and psychoeducational therapies are associated with reduced episode recurrence and stabilization of residual symptoms in individuals with bipolar disorder. Outpatients with bipolar disorder receiving pharmacotherapy should also be offered psychosocial treatments that emphasize illness management strategies and enhance coping skills, preferably in family or group format. The findings highlight the importance of skills-based psychosocial interventions combined with pharmacotherapy for patients with bipolar disorder.

Prior Choices of Between-Study Heterogeneity in Contemporary Bayesian Network Meta-analyses: an Empirical Study

Kristine J. Rosenberger et al.

Summary: Network meta-analysis (NMA) is commonly implemented in medical research using Bayesian methods. This study evaluated the impact of different priors for heterogeneity on NMA results, indicating the importance of reporting priors and conducting sensitivity analyses for NMAs with small sample sizes. Informative priors can lead to narrower credible intervals in NMAs with few studies.

Current State of the Evidence: Examining the Effects of Orton-Gillingham Reading Interventions for Students With or at Risk for Word-Level Reading Disabilities

Elizabeth A. Stevens et al.

Summary: The study found that Orton-Gillingham reading interventions did not significantly impact the reading outcomes of students with or at risk for word-level reading disabilities, although there was a positive trend towards Orton-Gillingham-based approaches. More high-quality research with larger samples of students with word-level reading disabilities is needed to fully understand the effects of Orton-Gillingham interventions on reading outcomes for this population.
