LEADERSHIP STYLES: A COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENT AND WAY FORWARD

Thomas Fischer et al.

Summary: The author systematically reviews eight positive and two negative leadership styles, and identifies valence-based conflation as a common limitation. This limitation arises from classifying behaviors as inherently positive or negative, which leads to mixing behavior descriptions with evaluations of intentions, execution, or effects. This conflation results in amalgamation, redundancy, and most importantly, causal indeterminacy, which questions the entire evidence base of leadership style research. To address this, the author suggests distinguishing intended and displayed styles, as well as utilizing a configurational approach, to establish a strong foundation for future research.

Evaluating the Big Five as an Organizing Framework for Commonly Used Psychological Trait Scales

Timothy F. Bainbridge et al.

Summary: This study empirically examined whether the Big Five can serve as an organizing framework for psychological trait scales and found that a majority of stand-alone psychological trait scales can be closely related to the Big Five framework, with some scales reasonably labeled as facets of the Big Five. By adopting an integrative pluralism approach, construct proliferation can be reduced and findings from disparate fields can be more easily integrated.
