Female employment and intimate partner violence: Evidence from Syrian Refugee inflows to Turkey*

Bilge Erten et al.

Summary: The arrival of Syrian refugees in Turkish provinces led to a decline in female employment, which in turn reduced intimate partner violence. This reduction was not accompanied by changes in partner characteristics, gender attitudes, or division of labor. The results are consistent with instrumental theories of violence, suggesting that a decrease in female earning opportunities can decrease incentives for men to use violence for rent extraction.
