When a Sunny Day Gives You Butterflies: An Electrophysiological Investigation of Concreteness and Context Effects in Semantic Word Processing

Laura Bechtold et al.

Summary: Theories on controlled semantic cognition hypothesize that word concreteness and linguistic context interact during semantic word processing. This study utilized an ERP and RT measurement to investigate this interaction in 19 healthy participants using a validated cueing paradigm. The results showed separate but interacting effects of concreteness and context on automatic and controlled stages of contextual semantic processing, with differences observed in both electrophysiological and behavioral measures.

Summary: This article discusses the types of meaningful relations underlying abstract concepts and emphasizes the importance of linguistic and real-world context in understanding words and events. By exploring thematic and semantic relations, a better understanding of abstract concepts can be achieved.

Concepts for Which We Need Others More: The Case of Abstract Concepts

Anna M. Borghi

Summary: The capability to form and use concepts is crucial in human cognition. Abstract concepts, which are grounded in sensorimotor processes, require linguistic and social interactions for acquisition and use. These concepts generate more uncertainty, leading individuals to seek information and negotiate meaning. Others play a vital role in acquiring, processing, and using abstract concepts.

Dual coding of knowledge in the human brain

Summary: This study investigates how the human brain codes knowledge about the world and finds evidence in visually deprived individuals for non-sensory, language-derived knowledge representation. This discovery provides evidence for a dual-coding knowledge neural framework.

Corroborating behavioral evidence for the interplay of representational richness and semantic control in semantic word processing

Laura Bechtold et al.

Summary: This study aimed to replicate and validate the effects of concreteness and context on semantic word processing. The results showed that both concrete and contextual cues facilitated word processing in a semantic judgment task. The study supports theories integrating representational richness and semantic control mechanisms in semantic word processing.
