Remote assessment of surgical site infection (SSI) using patient-taken wound images: Development and evaluation of a method for research and routine practice

Summary: This study developed and evaluated a method for patients to capture standardized wound images for remote wound assessment to detect surgical site infection (SSI). The results showed that the method is simple, standardized, and acceptable, and high-quality images can be used for remote assessment of SSI.

Patients' experiences regarding severe leg wound infection associated with coronary artery bypass grafting: A qualitative study

Summary: Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is the most common cardiac surgery worldwide. However, wound healing complications related to saphenous vein harvesting are common, with reported infection rates ranging from 2% to 20%. This qualitative study explored the experiences of patients who developed severe infection in the harvesting site after CABG. The findings revealed that severe infection had varying impacts on patients' bodies and minds, causing pain, anxiety, and limitations in daily life. Improved pain management and person-centered care are needed to address these issues.

The effect of extra safety measures on incidence of surgical site infection after alloplastic breast reconstruction

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of implementing extra perioperative safety measures and precautions on the incidence of surgical site infections (SSI) after alloplastic breast reconstruction. The results showed no significant difference in SSI incidence between the two cohorts, suggesting that the additional measures did not contribute to reducing infections.

Improving patient understanding on discharge from the short stay unit: an integrated human factors and quality improvement approach

Summary: This intervention used a systematic approach to improve patient understanding after discharge from the adult acute medicine short stay unit. Written information was found to be effective in improving understanding, but required redesign to be more patient-friendly. While the intervention improved patient understanding in most domains, there was still room for improvement in understanding medication changes. Further work is needed to improve the reliability of the discharge document and enhance understanding of medication changes.
