The findings indicate that a significant proportion of adults perceive sports as unwelcoming to LGBT athletes and report experiencing sports-related mistreatment. Homonegativity and sport: A systematic review of the literature

Luca Rolle et al.

Summary: The hypermasculine subculture of individual and team sports can lead to discriminatory attitudes towards LGB people at a higher rate. While some studies found positive attitudes towards homosexuality, particularly among younger generations, there still exists adherence to traditional masculinity and veiled discriminatory expressions. Additionally, overt discrimination has been identified, and LGB athletes often perceive sport contexts as discriminatory. Further interventions are needed to raise awareness and promote inclusive attitudes in sporting contexts regarding homosexuality-related issues.

This study found that rejection and denial from both heterosexual and homosexual individuals negatively affect the well-being of bisexual and pansexual individuals.
