Qualitative and quantitative evidence of motivation states for physical activity, exercise and being sedentary from university student focus groups

Matthew A. Stults-Kolehmainen et al.

Summary: Motivation for physical activity and sedentary behaviors varies and can be affectively-charged. This study utilized a mixed-methods approach to examine the postulates of the WANT model. The results showed that people experience desires to move and rest, and these motivation states fluctuate significantly, especially in the context of stress, boredom, satiety, and deprivation. The findings largely supported the postulates of the WANT model.

Inactivity Causes Resistance to Improvements in Metabolism After Exercise

Edward F. Coyle et al.

Summary: Prolonged sitting hinders the benefits of running exercise on fat oxidation and plasma triglyceride reduction, which can be prevented by walking 8500 steps per day or incorporating hourly cycle sprints. There is an interplay between background physical activity and exercise stimuli in regulating acute and chronic adaptations to exercise.

Effects of short sprint interval training on aerobic and anaerobic indices: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: The study suggests that short sprint interval training (sSIT) is highly effective in improving maximal oxygen consumption (V?O(2)max), aerobic, and anaerobic performances in physically active young healthy adults and athletes. Various exercise modes, such as cycling, running, paddling, and punching, can benefit from sSIT protocols.

Effect of Morning and Evening Exercise on Energy Balance: A Pilot Study

Seth A. Creasy et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of randomizing adults with overweight and obesity to morning or evening aerobic exercise. The study found that both morning and evening exercise sessions were well-received and had high levels of adherence. Additionally, both groups experienced increases in total daily energy expenditure, with the morning group having an increase in energy intake and the evening group having a decrease in energy intake. Further research is needed to understand how exercise timing affects energy balance and weight regulation.

Exploring activity compensation amongst youth and adults: a systematic review

Brittany A. Swelam et al.

Summary: Despite significant efforts to increase physical activity and reduce sedentary behavior, interventions have had limited success in sustaining behavior change over time. One possible explanation is activity compensation, but little is known about it. This review aimed to synthesize existing research on activity compensation in youth and adults and identify potential mechanisms.

Effect of sleep on weight loss and adherence to diet and physical activity recommendations during an 18-month behavioral weight loss intervention

Seth A. Creasy et al.

Summary: This study found that sleep quality is associated with the outcomes of a weight loss intervention. Lower sleep efficiency, higher wake after sleep onset, more awakenings, and higher sleep onset latency are associated with attenuated weight loss. Later waketime, longer time in bed, longer sleep duration, higher wake after sleep onset, more awakenings, and higher sleep onset latency are associated with lower odds of achieving recommended levels of physical activity.

Physical Activity and Total Daily Energy Expenditure in Older US Adults: Constrained versus Additive Models

Erik A. Willis et al.

Summary: This study explored the relationship between physical activity and total energy expenditure in older adults, highlighting the role of energy balance status. The results showed that the impact of physical activity on total energy expenditure differed depending on whether individuals were in a positive or negative energy balance state. A prospective study with sufficient power is needed to confirm these initial findings.

Relationships between components of the 24-hour activity cycle and feelings of energy and fatigue in college students: A systematic review

Ginny M. Frederick et al.

Summary: This systematic review found that sleep quality and quantity may be positively associated with feelings of energy and negatively associated with feelings of fatigue among college students. Most studies focused on the relationship between moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and feelings of energy or fatigue, showing both positive and negative relationships, respectively. More research is needed to understand the relationships between light-intensity physical activity (LIPA) and sedentary behavior (SED) with feelings of energy and fatigue in this population.

Energy compensation and adiposity in humans

Vincent Careau et al.

Summary: Understanding the impacts of activity on energy balance is crucial, as increasing activity levels may lead to diminishing returns in energy expenditure. Only a portion of the extra calories burned from additional activity are actually burned that day, with the rest being compensated for by reduced basal energy expenditure. The degree of energy compensation varies among individuals based on their body composition, which may influence the accumulation of body fat and the difficulty of losing weight.
