Unravelling the life-history patterns and habitat preferences of the Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica) in the Pearl River, China

Fangmin Shuai et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the Sr and Ca microchemical profiles of otoliths of silver eels in the Pearl River, China, and found that the Japanese eels in this river are mainly freshwater eels, spending most of their lives in fresh water without exposure to salt water. The migration time to the ocean has been delayed by about a month in the past 20 years. RDA analysis also showed that juveniles and adults preferred high salinity and high tide levels, while young eels preferred habitats with high river fractals.

When the Eel Meets Dams: Larger Dams' Long-Term Impacts on Anguilla anguilla (L., 1758)

Cinzia Podda et al.

Summary: This study compared the occurrence of European eel in the Sardinian rivers between a historical period and recent data. The research found that dams have significantly disrupted the connectivity of the rivers, leading to a significant decrease in eel occurrence. The construction features and the time of dams' construction have negative effects on eel occurrence. Therefore, future restoration practices for eel should consider dam removal or modification, as well as the addition of fish ladders.

A possible strong impact of tidal power plant on silver eels? migration

Thomas Trancart et al.

Summary: There are very few tidal power plants in the world, but with the increasing demand for renewable energy, more projects are being studied. These power plants are larger than unidirectional fluvial hydropower plants and modify the natural tidal cycle in estuarine systems. Their impact on megafaunal movements should be specifically considered and studied.

Metal pollution in the Pearl River Estuary and implications for estuary management: The influence of hydrological connectivity associated with estuarine mixing

Lixia Niu et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively analyzed the behaviors of seven metals in the Pearl River Estuary, revealing moderate pollution levels overall, with occasional severe perturbations. The eastern estuary was more heavily polluted by metals, and riverine inputs and estuarine mixing significantly influenced the distribution and movement of trace metals in the estuary.

Important questions to progress science and sustainable management of anguillid eels

David Righton et al.

Summary: Anguillid eels are globally distributed in various aquatic environments and face threats from human activities, climate change, and other factors. Research is needed to address knowledge gaps and to develop effective management strategies for the conservation of these important species. Three main research themes were identified, but significant challenges remain in understanding and protecting eel populations.

Variations in Summer Marine Heatwaves in the South China Sea

Yulong Yao et al.

Summary: Marine heatwaves (MHWs) in the South China Sea during summer, especially near the Nansha Islands and Beibu Gulf, have shown a significant increasing trend in the MHW days, duration, and frequency during 1982-2020. This is likely due to the anomalous intensification of the western North Pacific high pressure system causing disruptions in the summer southwest monsoon, leading to severe basin-wide MHWs in the South China Sea.

Nutrient Pollution and Its Dynamic Source-Sink Pattern in the Pearl River Estuary (South China)

Wei Tao et al.

Summary: The study in the Pearl River Estuary revealed a significant increase in nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations over the past two decades, largely influenced by riverine inputs. Phosphorus accumulation in the northeast region led to eutrophication risks and blooms, impacting the aquatic environment. The biogeochemical processes in the estuary were highly sensitive to nutrient pollution, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus, with phosphorus being identified as the limiting factor for phytoplankton growth.
