A pore-scale study on the dynamics of spontaneous imbibition for heterogeneous sandstone gas reservoirs

Mingchuan Wang et al.

Summary: The objective of this study is to characterize the heterogeneity of low-permeability sandstones and investigate their effect on spontaneous imbibition from the perspective of the pore scale. CT scans were used to characterize the clay mineral distribution and heterogeneity of the cores. The results showed that clay minerals have higher CT numbers than the core matrix, micropores are predominantly distributed in clay particles, and water imbibition rate is influenced by permeability and clay particle distribution.

An analytical solution on spontaneous imbibition coupled with fractal roughness, slippage and gravity effects in low permeability reservoir

Agihtias Salam et al.

Summary: In this study, a new analytical model of spontaneous imbibition height in low-permeability reservoirs was derived, considering various factors such as effective viscosity, surface roughness, slip, and gravity effects in a single tortuous capillary tube. The analytical model showed good agreement with experimental results from literatures in typical low-permeability core samples. Sensitivity studies indicated that parameters like surface fractal dimension, effective viscosity, and contact angle have an inverse relationship with imbibition height on rough surfaces, while pore radius, interfacial tension, and slip length have a proportional relationship with imbibition height. Neglecting slip effects may lead to underestimation of imbibition height in nanopore sizes. The presented models provide clear physical interpretations for each parameter affecting imbibition height performance.

Experiments and phase-field simulation of counter-current imbibition in porous media with different pore structure

Qingbang Meng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of pore structure of porous media on counter-current imbibition. Experimental results show that counter-current imbibition can only proceed for a short time in homogeneous porous media but can continue in heterogeneous porous media. Numerical simulation results indicate that less oil is produced in homogeneous porous media compared to heterogeneous porous media.

Factors affecting the lower limit of the safe mud weight window for drilling operation in hydrate-bearing sediments in the Northern South China Sea

Qingchao Li et al.

Summary: Maintaining wellbore stability is crucial for efficient production of offshore gas hydrates. Due to drilling mud invasion and disturbance, gas hydrates around the wellbore gradually break down, leading to borehole collapse. This study investigates sediment strength under different hydrate saturation and develops a new strength criterion. The impact of several critical factors on the lower limit of safe mud weight is also examined. The results show that the new criterion provides a more conservative estimation and a wider window for mud density design, contributing to borehole collapse prevention. The study highlights the temperature sensitivity of the safe mud weight window and the influence of stress difference on the design strategy for hydrate development.

Numerical studies of spontaneous imbibition in porous media: Model development and pore-scale perspectives

Chao-Zhong Qin et al.

Summary: Spontaneous imbibition is a crucial process in various subsurface and industrial applications involving two-phase flow. However, the lack of an efficient and reliable pore-scale model has hindered our understanding of how pore-filling events during spontaneous imbibition affect average transport properties and the trapping of nonwetting fluids. In this study, we experimentally verify a computationally efficient image-based dynamic pore-network model for spontaneous imbibition and conduct case studies on Nubian sandstone. Our findings reveal that the widely used Young-Laplace equation significantly overestimates the average capillary pressure in cocurrent spontaneous imbibition due to the lack of parameterization for dynamic pore-filling and air entrapment. Based on our numerical results, we elucidate the competition of pore-filling events at different viscosity ratios of wetting and nonwetting fluids. Our model provides a valuable tool for predicting spontaneous imbibition quantitatively in geological formations and bridges the gap between pore-scale flow dynamics and the Darcy theory of spontaneous imbibition.

Lixiao Xiao et al.

Summary: Lower-phase microemulsions with core-shell structure were prepared by microemulsion dilution method. The spontaneous imbibition mechanisms in ultra-low permeability and tight oil reservoirs were clarified, and the field microfracture huff and puff test of oil well was directed. The microemulsion system with cationic-nonionic surfactant as hydrophilic shell and No.3 white oil as oil phase core showed the highest imbibition recovery.

A FRACTAL MODEL FOR CAPILLARY FLOW THROUGH A SINGLE TORTUOUS CAPILLARY WITH ROUGHENED SURFACES IN FIBROUS POROUS MEDIA

Boqi Xiao et al.

Summary: In this study, a fractal model for capillary flow through a single tortuous capillary with roughened surfaces in fibrous porous media was derived. The results of the model were found to be in agreement with existing models in the literature. It was observed that the imbibition height and mass of capillary rise decrease with increasing relative roughness, while the equilibrium time in the capillary decreases with increasing roughness. Additionally, the imbibition height and mass of capillary rise were found to increase with imbibition time.

Shale pore connectivity and influencing factors based on spontaneous imbibition combined with a nuclear magnetic resonance experiment

Xuejun Wang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that microscale pore connectivity is the most prominent, followed by mesoscale and macroscale pores (or bedding fractures or microfractures); moreover, water-wet pore connectivity is superior to oil-wet pore connectivity. Oil imbibition slope is negatively correlated with production index (PI), positively correlated with Tmax (reflecting organic matter maturity) and calcite content, and not significantly correlated with total organic carbon (TOC) content or other mineral contents.

Lucas-Washburn Equation-Based Modeling of Capillary-Driven Flow in Porous Systems

Jianchao Cai et al.

Summary: Fluid flow driven by capillary pressure in porous systems is a common phenomenon in nature and industry, with the classical LW equation often leading to inaccurate predictions due to assumptions that are not true for many natural situations. Recent studies have focused on modifying and extending the LW equation to improve understanding of imbibition dynamics in various porous systems. Progress in computational techniques has also helped advance research in this area.

Experimental Investigation on the Characteristic Mobilization and Remaining Oil Distribution under CO2 Huff-n-Puff of Chang 7 Continental Shale Oil

Jianhong Zhu et al.

Summary: The Chang 7 continental shale oil reservoir is tight, with extremely low recovery factor and high remaining oil. In this study, physical simulation experiments of CO2 huff-n-puff shale oil and NMR tests were conducted to investigate the impact of cycle numbers and permeability on recovery degree, as well as shale oil mobilization characteristics and remaining oil distribution. The results showed that the ORFs increased gradually in natural logarithmic form, with the biggest economic cycle numbers between approximately 3 and 5. A higher permeability led to higher ORF, but the difference decreased between experimental samples with increasing cycles. Additionally, macropores had significantly higher ORF compared to micropores, where most of the remaining oil was distributed.
