Autoignition enhancement of ammonia spray under engine-relevant conditions via hydrogen addition: Thermal, chemical, and charge cooling effects

Ahmad Hadi Bakir et al.

Summary: This study computationally investigated the auto-ignition behavior of liquid ammonia spray under engine-relevant thermochemical conditions, as well as its spray dynamics, vaporization, flash boiling effects, and emissions. The results showed that ammonia sprays can only auto-ignite successfully under engine-relevant conditions when ambient hydrogen is added. This study provided useful insights for the application of ammonia as a zero-carbon diesel fuel for ground transportation.

Study of performance, combustion, and NOx emission behavior of an SI engine fuelled with ammonia/hydrogen blends at various compression ratio

M. H. Dinesh et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effects of hydrogen blending on internal combustion engine performance under variable compression ratio and different speeds. The results show that increasing compression ratio and hydrogen fraction can improve combustion and fuel efficiency, but it also leads to higher exhaust temperature and increased NOx emissions.

Effect of ammonia addition on combustion and emissions performance of a hydrogen engine at part load and stoichiometric conditions

Changwei Ji et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the performance and emission characteristics of a spark-ignition engine burning a premixed hydrogen/ammonia/air mixture, finding that the addition of ammonia increased ignition delay and flame development time, while reducing the rate of in-cylinder pressure rise. Experimental results suggest that ammonia can be used as a combustion inhibitor without affecting engine performance.

Advancements of combustion technologies in the ammonia-fuelled engines

Meng-Choung Chiong et al.

Summary: Ammonia has become an attractive alternative fuel for power generation, showing potential in internal combustion engines and gas turbines. Different optimization strategies may be needed for different types of engines, such as increasing hydrogen mass fraction or utilizing multiple fuel injections. Partial premixed combustion has gained considerable interest in gas turbine research for its ability to operate at low equivalence ratios.

A review on ammonia, ammonia-hydrogen and ammonia-methane fuels

Wai Siong Chai et al.

Summary: The combustion of fuels for energy generation is crucial for human activities, but it results in emissions that cause environmental complications and health risks. The replacement of conventional fuels for zero carbon emission is important, with ammonia offering advantages over hydrogen as a carbon-free fuel, but facing challenges such as low burning velocity and high emissions. Therefore, the study of secondary fuels like hydrogen and methane to assist ammonia combustion is essential.

Investigation of ammonia and hydrogen as CO2-free fuels for heavy duty engines using a high pressure dual fuel combustion process

Stephanie Frankl et al.

Summary: The study focused on the use of ammonia and hydrogen in high-pressure-dual-fuel combustion, with results showing that hydrogen can be used in the engine without further modifications. Additionally, the combustion of ammonia was effective, especially when injected at higher pressures, and pre-heating of ammonia was found to increase combustion efficiency.
