Morphological and anatomical changes of Salicornia roots are associated with different salinity and nutrients conditions in contrasting genotypes

Samaneh Moatabarniya et al.

Summary: Soil salinity can induce morphological and anatomical changes in the roots and shoots of halophytic plants, which may be influenced by external nutrient factors. This study found that treating two different genotypes of the halophyte Salicornia with different concentrations of NO3-, NH4+, and NaCl showed different effects on root characteristics and biomass formation. Salinity increased the diameter of the xylem cell wall and promoted fiber network development, leading to lower root and shoot biomass. However, increased NH4+ or NO3+ concentrations combined with salinity enhanced root biomass and length. These findings suggest that a significant root structural plasticity underlies the adaptation mechanism of salt tolerance in different Salicornia genotypes.

Mathematical modeling and quality parameters ofSalicornia fruticosadried by convective drying

F. Rodriguez-Ramos et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of convective drying at different temperatures on the drying kinetics and quality parameters of Salicornia fruticosa, finding that the Henderson model was the most suitable for predicting equilibrium moisture content. The Midilli-Kucuk model showed the best fitting to drying curves. Drying had significant effects on two quality parameters, with the optimum drying temperature identified as 70 degrees C.

Global predictions of primary soil salinization under changing climate in the 21st century

Amirhossein Hassani et al.

Summary: Excess salt accumulation in the root zone causes soil salinization, which affects soil health, biodiversity, and food security. The authors used machine learning algorithms to predict global soil salinization under changing climate in the 21st century, identifying hotspots in drylands such as South America, southern and western Australia, Mexico, southwest United States, and South Africa. Conversely, they project a decrease in soil salinity in northwest United States, the Horn of Africa, Eastern Europe, Turkmenistan, and west Kazakhstan in response to climate change.
