Yield and bulb quality of storage onion cultivars as affected by farming system and nitrogen dose

Nadezhda Golubkina et al.

Summary: The need for sustainable management systems is driven by environmental protection and consumer demand for safe, high-quality food. A research study compared the effects of organic and conventional farming systems, nitrogen doses, and cultivars on onion bulb yield, quality, antioxidants, elemental composition, and heavy metal content. The results showed that conventional farming generally led to higher bulb yield and nutrient content, while organic farming had a positive impact on overall bulb quality. The optimal nitrogen dose for balancing yield and quality was found to be 166.5 kg/ha.

Yield and Morphophysiology of Onion Grown under Salinity and Fertilization with Silicon

Jefferson Bittencourt Venancio et al.

Summary: Salinity limits agricultural yield in arid and semi-arid regions. This study investigates the effects of silicon fertilization on onion plants under salt stress. The results show that silicon fertilization can improve onion yield, physiology, and postharvest quality, and alleviate the negative impact of high salinity. The recommended silicon fertilization rate for onion plants under saline stress conditions is 78.5 kg/ha.

Planting Date and Different N-Fertilization Rates Differently Modulate Agronomic and Economic Traits of a Sicilian Onion Landrace and of a Commercial Variety

Giuseppe Di Miceli et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the agronomic response of two onion varieties in Sicily to different planting dates and nitrogen fertilization rates, and also conducted an economic analysis. The results showed that higher nitrogen doses led to higher yields and greater net benefits. The traditional planting date was found to be the best choice for achieving optimum agronomic response.

Quantification of water stress impacts on canopy traits, yield, quality and water productivity of onion (Allium cepa L.) cultivars in a shallow basaltic soil of water scarce zone

G. C. Wakchaure et al.

Summary: This study shows that different levels of water stress have varying impacts on the yield and quality of red and white onions, with white and local cultivars showing greater tolerance to water stress. Additionally, appropriate selection of onion cultivars can reduce water usage and enhance water productivity.
