Seed vitality and fungal contamination in Abies nebrodensis

G. Mirabile et al.

Summary: This study aimed to detect and eliminate fungal contaminants in Abies nebrodensis seeds using different surface sterilizing agents and hot water treatment. Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus flavus, and Stemphylium vesicarium were identified as the most frequent fungal contaminants. The germination rate of non-contaminated seeds ranged from 0% to 36.4% depending on the sterilization protocol. Further analyses are needed to investigate the influence of these fungi on the seed germination process and their relationship with A. nebrodensis seedlings.

Cultivable Fungal Endophytes in Roots, Rhizomes and Leaves of Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile along the Coast of Sicily, Italy

Livio Torta et al.

Summary: The study found that the roots of Posidonia oceanica are the main habitat for endophytic fungi, with Lulwoana sp. being the most common fungal taxon isolated. Additionally, eight other fungal taxa were identified. The endophytic fungi may have a strong interaction with the host, potentially supporting the living host.

Chitosan and other edible coatings to extend shelf life, manage postharvest decay, and reduce loss and waste of fresh fruits and vegetables

Gianfranco Romanazzi et al.

Summary: Fresh fruits and vegetables continue metabolic activity after harvest, leading to ripening, increased susceptibility to decay-causing fungi, and consequent loss and waste. Edible coatings can reduce waste, respect the environment, and benefit consumer health. They act as a protective agent, extending shelf life, and have the potential to control ripening and maintain nutritional properties of fresh produce.
