Thermomechanical Microstructural Predictions of Fracture Nucleation of Zircaloy-4 Alloys With δ and e Hydride Distributions

I. Mohamed et al.

Summary: A crystalline dislocation-density formulation combined with a nonlinear finite-element method was used to study the thermomechanical behavior and fracture modes of h.c.p. zircaloy with f.c.c. or b.c.c. hydrides. The study shows that at high temperatures, thermal softening of hydrides leads to increased ductility and inhibits crack nucleation and growth. The results provide insights into the fracture resistance of circumferential hydrides compared to radial hydrides under different volume fractions and loading conditions.

Modeling of the microstructural behavior of hydrided zirconium alloys

Mohamed M. A. Zikry

Summary: A multiphase microstructural system consisting of two types of hydrides was modeled, with the effects of different factors such as hydride volume fraction, morphology, orientation, and distribution on overall behavior investigated. Predictions show that a distribution of circumferential hydrides has higher strength and ductility, and zircaloy epsilon (bcc) hydride systems exhibit more ductility and strength compared to zircaloy delta (fcc) systems.

Effect of radial hydride on room temperature fracture toughness of Zr-2.5Nb pressure tube material

Avinash Gopalan et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of radial hydride on the room temperature fracture toughness of the Zr-2.5Nb pressure tube material. It was found that the role of plastic deformation on the fracture toughness mechanism decreases with the increase in hydride continuity coefficient (HCC), and the fracture toughness of the Zr-2.5Nb pressure tube material varied linearly with HCC at room temperature.

Summary: Machine learning methods are commonly used for pattern recognition and can offer substantial computational advantages over conventional numerical methods. The proposed framework in this research, combining machine learning and crystal plasticity, accurately predicts stress-strain behavior and texture evolution for a variety of materials within the FCC family.
