Experimental study on thermal performance of a pulsating heat pipe using R1233zd(E) as working fluid

Linli Wu et al.

Summary: This experiment investigates the thermal characteristics of using the fourth-generation environmental refrigerant R1233zd(E) as the working fluid for pulsating heat pipes (PHPs). The effects of inner diameter, filling ratio, and gravity on start-up characteristics are studied. The results show that PHPs with a diameter over 1.5 mm and an optimum filling ratio of 50-60% exhibit lower thermal resistance. Increasing the filling ratio enhances the maximum heat transfer capacity of 1 mm diameter PHPs. PHPs with a high filling ratio of 70% can start vertically, but their heat transfer performance deteriorates under horizontal mode. The maximum heat transfer capacity of 190 W is achieved in the 2.0 mm inner diameter PHP at a filling ratio around 50%. An empirical correlation is proposed to predict the thermal performance of vertical PHPs with R1233zd(E) based on a total of 180 experimental data.
