Design Exploration for Sustainable Regional Hybrid-Electric Aircraft: A Study Based on Technology Forecasts

Valerio Marciello et al.

Summary: This study aims to support the development of a technology roadmap for sustainable and competitive electric aircraft systems by considering the environmental sustainability of a 50-passenger hybrid-electric aircraft from a life-cycle perspective. The exploration of three major technology streams for energy storage, including batteries, fuel cells, and turbine internal combustion engine generators, was conducted to identify the most promising solutions for different time horizons. The results show a significant reduction in fuel consumption and emissions, with the potential for zero direct emissions by 2050.

Economic Viability of Energy Communities versus Distributed Prosumers

Lubov Petrichenko et al.

Summary: This article contributes to exploring the profitability of individual distributed prosumers and energy community prosumers. The results indicate that energy communities are more profitable than individual prosumers, with a slightly higher energy loss. Removing regulatory barriers can facilitate economically efficient energy transition.

Influence of Sustainable Aviation Fuels on the Formation of Contrails and Their Properties

Mafalda Narciso et al.

Summary: Contrails and contrail cirrus are major contributors to radiative forcing in the aviation sector, with short lifetimes that make them suitable for short-term mitigation measures. Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) reduces soot emissions and initial ice crystal numbers in contrails, but may also lead to increased contrail frequency and ice mass. The study explores the impact of soot and water vapor emissions from SAF on contrail formation, optical depth, and lifespan, showing potential reductions in contrail lifetime and optical depth under certain conditions.
