Summary: Friction materials were prepared using the powder metallurgy process with varying proportions of iron and graphite powders. The friction and wear properties of the materials were evaluated using the MM3000 friction and wear tester. By combining scanning electron microscopy and physical and mechanical properties testing, the synergistic effect of Fe powder and graphite on the properties of the friction materials was studied. The results showed that increasing the iron content enhanced the hardness and strength of the materials, and the optimal comprehensive properties were achieved with 14% Fe content and 20% graphite powder.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of aging plus cryogenic treatment on the machinability of 7075 aluminum alloy in high speed cutting. The results show that cryogenic treatment reduces the cutting force and leads to smaller grain size and more precipitates in the aluminum matrix. After cryogenic treatment, the alloy precipitates are denser and discontinuous, and the stacking fault on the machined surface is greatly improved.

Summary: RMI-C/SiC composites fabricated using a carbon fiber reinforced nanoporous carbon matrix preform demonstrate high performance with dense and pure SiC matrix and intact carbon fibers. In contrast, composites based on conventional pyrocarbon or resin carbon matrixes show poorer properties with less SiC, residual silicon and carbon, and corroded fibers. This work opens up a new way for the development of high-performance ceramic matrix composites by siliconizing C/C preforms with nanoporous carbon matrix.

Summary: Two novel non-isoelectronic with diamond (non-IED) B-C-O phases, tI16-B8C6O2 and mP16-B8C5O3, have been discovered. The study on their phonon scattering spectra and independent elastic constants confirms their stability under ambient pressure and high pressure. The research on formation enthalpies and their relationship with pressure suggests the importance of high pressure technology in the synthesis of these compounds. These phases exhibit different electrical conductivity and bandgap characteristics, and their mechanical properties are significantly affected by pressure. These findings are of great significance for the study of non-IED B-C-O compounds.

Summary: The stability of h-BN edges terminated by isolated Ni atoms on the Ni(111) surface was investigated, and it was found that most edges terminated by isolated Ni atoms have lower energies and the zigzag edge terminated with nitrogen atoms (ZZN) is the most stable one. Based on these results and Wulff construction theory, the equilibrium morphology of h-BN domains in different environments was predicted. The understanding of the stability of h-BN edges is crucial for revealing its growth mechanism and has implications for the synthesis of other two-dimensional binary materials.
