Isolation of a multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli pathotype Stx2:Cnf1:Cnf2:Eae as a potential cause of hemorrhagic diarrhea and secondary septicemia in a dog

Annelize Jonker et al.

Summary: This article reports a multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli that caused the death of an animal after surgery. The strain had characteristics of both enterohemorrhagic E. coli and necrotoxigenic E. coli, and showed resistance to multiple antibiotics. The discovery is concerning as E. coli can be shared between pets and their owners.

Factorial design and post-antibiotic sub-MIC effects of linezolid combined with fosfomycin against vancomycin-resistant enterococci

Yisong Yan et al.

Summary: The combination of linezolid with fosfomycin showed synergistic and additive effects on VREs, with no significant difference in bactericidal effect compared to single drug treatment at 24 hours. While the combination did not significantly extend the post-antibiotic effect or single sub-minimum inhibitory concentration effect, it significantly prolonged the post-antibiotic sub-minimum inhibitory concentration effect duration compared to single drug treatment at lower concentrations.

Summary: This study investigates the distribution of resistance and virulence genes in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) among different animal hosts. Whole genome sequencing of S. aureus isolates from various animal species revealed widespread sharing of antibiotic resistance and superantigen genes. The findings provide insights for developing strategies to combat high-risk clones.

Summary: The prevalence and characteristics of mcr-1-positive E. coli in hospitalized companion animals were investigated in this study. Seven strains of MCRPEC were identified, all of which exhibited multidrug-resistant phenotypes. These strains harbored various resistance genes and had the potential to be transmitted to humans.

Effect of antimicrobial administration on fecal microbiota of critically ill dogs: dynamics of antimicrobial resistance over time

Julie Menard et al.

Summary: Long-term use of antimicrobial drugs in animals may result in the development of drug-resistant bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. In this prospective study, it was found that resistant Escherichia coli increased after one week of treatment and returned to baseline proportions after 60 days. Additionally, the detection of resistance genes was associated with phenotypic resistance. These findings suggest that companion animals may act as reservoirs of multidrug-resistant pathogens, emphasizing the importance of veterinary antimicrobial stewardship and surveillance efforts.

Coexistence of Fosfomycin Resistance DeterminantfosAandfosA3 inEnterobacter cloacaeIsolated from Pets with Urinary Tract Infection in Taiwan

Lin Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, the characteristics of fosA and fosA3 in Enterobacter cloacae isolated from urine specimens of companion pets in Taiwan were analyzed. It was found that fosA and fosA3-positive isolates had different genetic backgrounds, and fosA3 demonstrated stronger potential for dissemination and activity in inactivating fosfomycin compared to fosA. Different mobile elements may contribute to the spread of fosA and fosA3 in these isolates.

Summary: The study conducted in Hungary screened dogs and owners, finding a higher carriage rate of S. aureus in humans and more common presence of S. pseudintermedius in dogs. Although the isolates were generally susceptible to antibiotics, high tetracycline resistance was noted in S. pseudintermedius strains. Co-carried isolates shared similar resistance and virulence gene patterns, providing evidence for potential human-to-dog and dog-to-human transmission.

Dae-Wi Kim et al.

Summary: Understanding the antibiotic resistome and its transmission across humans, animals, and the environment is crucial for combating antimicrobial resistance. The One Health approach plays a significant role in evaluating critical antibiotic resistance genes and their hosts in different sectors, highlighting the need for advanced research methodologies to deepen our knowledge. Studying the mechanisms of ARG transmission and identifying selective pressures will be key in improving our understanding and control of antibiotic resistance.

Summary: Non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) is a common cause of gastroenteritis, with the invasive infection caused by an infrequently reported serovar Telelkebir strain FJ001 in China carrying antimicrobial-resistant and typhoidtoxin genes. Genomic investigation revealed a high relatedness among global S. Telelkebir isolates, suggesting potential rapid transmissions through international travels. This study highlights the importance of surveillance and understanding the threat posed by the unique combination of virulent and antimicrobial-resistant determinants in NTS infections.
