Genetic diversity of Newcastle disease viruses circulating in wild and synanthropic birds in Ukraine between 2006 and 2015

Iryna V. Goraichuk et al.

Summary: Newcastle disease virus (NDV) infects a wide range of bird species worldwide and is of importance to the poultry industry. Our study in Ukraine revealed the detection of different genotypes of NDV in synanthropic birds, indicating the potential role of these birds in viral transmission and spread. Phylogenetic analysis also suggested a potential connection between Ukrainian and Kazakhstan NDV strains, as well as the exchange of NDV strains between wild waterfowl from Ukraine and other continents.

Screening of Healthy Feral Pigeons (Columba livia domestica) in the City of Zurich Reveals Continuous Circulation of Pigeon Paramyxovirus-1 and a Serious Threat of Transmission to Domestic Poultry

Desiree Annaheim et al.

Summary: Pigeon paramyxovirus-1 (PPMV-1) is a common virus that can continuously circulate in feral pigeons and potentially contaminate domestic poultry. A recent outbreak of Newcastle disease in Zurich was caused by PPMV-1, indicating that feral pigeons may serve as a potential source of transmission.

Virulence during Newcastle Disease Viruses Cross Species Adaptation

Claudio L. Afonso

Summary: The hypothesis reviews the host adaptation in virulent Newcastle disease viruses and its accompanying virulence modulation. It suggests that current NDVs evolved from low virulence viruses in the 1920-1940s, giving rise to multiple virulent genotypes. Evolutionary changes have led to circulating velogenic-viscerotropic viruses being more transmissible and pathogenic in chickens compared to older velogenic-neurotropic viruses.
