Unexpected Performance Improvements of Nitrogen Dioxide and Ozone Sensors by Including Carbon Monoxide Sensor Signal

Md Hasibul Hasan et al.

Summary: Low-cost air quality (LCAQ) sensors are commonly used for community air quality monitoring. However, the data collected by these sensors often have significant noise due to the lack of proper calibration methods. This study deployed LCAQ sensors measuring nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone (O3) in six US cities and evaluated the impact of different climatic and geographical conditions on their performance and calibration. By including signals from carbon monoxide (CO) sensors in the calibration models, the performance of NO2 and O3 sensors generally improved, especially in selected cities like Riverside and New York City.

MOX-Based Resistive Gas Sensors with Different Types of Sensitive Materials (Powders, Pellets, Films), Used in Environmental Chemistry

Paul Chesler et al.

Summary: Various experimental techniques such as mass spectrometry, chromatography, NMR, IR, and X-Rays, or a combination of these techniques, can be used to identify unknown gaseous species or analyze the composition of gaseous mixtures. However, these techniques require expensive equipment and qualified personnel. Gas sensors, particularly resistive type chemosensors, provide a viable and inexpensive alternative due to their simple detection mechanism and low manufacturing costs. This review focuses on MOX-based chemoresistors with different sensitive substrates, such as powders, pellets, or films, and highlights the trend towards sensor miniaturization and greener synthesis routes for cost-effectiveness. The goal is to develop sensors with high 3S parameters (sensitivity, selectivity, and stability) that can be mass-produced and widely implemented.
