Structural properties of concrete reinforced with bamboo fibers: a review

Jawad Ahmad et al.

Summary: This review assesses the effect of bamboo fiber-reinforced concrete, summarizing past and recent research on its flowability, strength, durability, and morphology. The study finds that bamboo fibers reduce concrete flow, but also increase strength parameters and enhance tensile strain to prevent brittle failure. The optimal addition proportion of bamboo fibers is recommended to be between 1% and 1.5% of the cement weight. The study concludes by suggesting further investigations for future advancements.

Coir from Coconut Processing Waste as a Raw Material for Applications beyond Traditional Uses

Wolfgang Stelte et al.

Summary: The global production of coconut exceeds 62 million tonnes per year and is predominantly used for food and oil production. However, a large amount of coconut husk remains unutilized after industrial processing, leading to environmental problems. This review article highlights new applications for coir, such as in binderless fiberboards, natural fiber composites, construction materials, solid biofuels, and as an absorbent for heavy metals and toxic materials. Utilizing coir in these new fields can help reduce waste and promote sustainability.

Summary: Basalt fibers are inorganic concrete fibers fabricated by melting basalt rock, exhibiting remarkable resistance to elevated temperatures compared to other manufactured fibers. This study investigated the effects of basalt fibers on the workability and properties of self-compacting concrete at various temperatures. The experimental results showed that increasing temperatures up to 500 degrees C reduced the tensile and compressive strengths of SCC by over 20%, and roughening the interface surface through sandblasting method achieved the optimum slant shear strength of hybrid concrete under fire.
