Alkaline hydrolysis of biomass as an alternative green method for bioplastics preparation: In situ cellulose nanofibrillation

Danila Merino et al.

Summary: Recently, mild acid hydrolysis has been proposed as a novel method to transform biomass into bioplastics. However, the alkaline hydrolysis of plant residues has not been studied for this purpose. In this study, a comprehensive comparative analysis was conducted on the physicochemical, thermal, mechanical, and morphological properties of bioplastics produced by acid and alkaline hydrolysis from two different plant residues. The results showed that the alkaline hydrolysis produced bioplastics with superior mechanical and barrier properties compared to the acid hydrolyzed biomass.

Lignin-enzyme interaction: A roadblock for efficient enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosics

Caoxing Huang et al.

Summary: Efficiently producing second-generation biofuels from biomass remains a long-term challenge due to biomass recalcitrance. Lignin significantly contributes to biomass recalcitrance by physically limiting enzyme access to carbohydrates. Research is focused on mitigating the negative effects of lignin on enzyme performance.

Combined acetic acid and enzymatic hydrolysis for xylooligosaccharides and monosaccharides production from poplar

Wenjun Ying et al.

Summary: Efficient production of xylooligosaccharides (XOS) from poplar was achieved by combining acetic acid (AC) hydrolysis and hydrogen peroxide-acetic acid (HPAC) pretreatment, resulting in a significant increase in XOS yield compared to xylanase hydrolysis alone.

Recent Developments in Lignocellulosic Biofuels, a Renewable Source of Bioenergy

Ashutosh Kumar Rai et al.

Summary: Biofuel is a non-fossil fuel derived from organic biomass and can be obtained from plants, animals, microorganisms, and waste. It is important for human beings to shift their dependency on fossil fuels to alternative types of fuel, including biofuels, to meet the increasing energy demand. This review focuses on second-generation lignocellulosic biofuels obtained from non-edible plant biomass in a more sustainable way.
