Effect of dietary inclusion of tea residue and tea leaves on ruminal fermentation characteristics and methane production

Qinghua Qiu et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of different types and inclusion levels of tea leaves and tea residue on rumen fermentation characteristics. The results showed that tea residue had higher crude protein and fiber content, while tea leaves had higher ether extract and crude ash content. There were interaction effects between feed type and inclusion level. Overall, the inclusion of tea residue and tea leaves had similar effects on rumen fermentation characteristics and methane production, but an inclusion level higher than 10% would inhibit rumen fermentation.

Impact of Rumen Fluid Storage on In Vitro Feed Fermentation Characteristics

Bereket Zeleke Tunkala et al.

Summary: The first phase of the experiment evaluated the effects of two rumen fluid (RF) storage methods on gas composition and dry matter disappearance (DMD) in wheat grain and lucerne hay under in vitro fermentation. The second phase aimed to quantify the impact of preserving RF for 180 days at -20 degrees C on in vitro fermentation parameters. Storing RF at -20 degrees C showed lower methane composition and higher gas production and DMD compared to storing RF at -80 degrees C, suggesting its preference when fresh RF is limited.

Rumen fluid preservation for in vitro gas production systems

Bereket Zeleke Tunkala et al.

Summary: This experiment evaluated several rumen fluid preservation techniques for in vitro feed fermentation. The results showed that the use of 5% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) for preservation resulted in similar gas production and organic acid concentration compared to fresh rumen fluid, indicating that DMSO preservation is a reliable technique.

Exploring AI-2-mediated interspecies communications within rumen microbial communities

Xiaozhen Liu et al.

Summary: This study identified genes related to quorum sensing (QS) in rumen microbial genomes and found that these genes were prevalent and highly expressed in the rumen, suggesting a universal cell-to-cell communication and social behavior mediated by QS in rumen microbes.

Diet Shift May Trigger LuxS/AI-2 Quorum Sensing in Rumen Bacteria

Xiao Wei et al.

Summary: This study found that a diet shift can trigger rumen bacterial LuxS/AI-2 quorum sensing by altering microbial density, AI-2 concentration, biofilm formation, and related gene expression. This, in turn, affects rumen fermentation characteristics and bacterial community diversity and composition.

Feeding Value Assessment of Substituting Cassava (Manihot esculenta) Residue for Concentrate of Dairy Cows Using an In Vitro Gas Test

Yuhui Zheng et al.

Summary: Cassava residue can be a good alternative feed for dairy cows, helping to address feed shortages in China. This study demonstrated the efficacy of using cassava residue as a dairy cow feedstuff and showed increased gas and VFA production at a 25% inclusion level of cassava residue, suggesting its potential to replace concentrate in the feed of Holstein cows.

Rumen Fermentation Characteristics Require More Time to Stabilize When Diet Shifts

Qinghua Qiu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the proper time required to achieve stabilization in digestibility, serum metabolism, and rumen fermentation characteristics when different diets shift. Results showed that nutrient apparent digestibility and serum metabolic parameters were stable across each monthly collection, while rumen fermentation characteristics require more time to stabilize when diet shifts.
