Ionization potential-based design of deep eutectic solvent for recycling of spent lithium ion batteries

Summary: In this study, a simple and universal approach using ionization potential (IP) calculation assisted with cyclic voltammetry test was proposed for selecting organic acid as a reductant in deep eutectic solvent (DES) for recycling of spent lithium ion batteries (LIBs). The reducibility of organic acid was found to have a close relationship with the IP, and organic acids of lower IP were found to be more preferred as reductants. The designed DES from IP calculation was versatile for treating various kinds of spent battery cathodes and capable of multiple uses, reducing secondary chemical waste and pollution.

Summary: Metal-oxygen batteries are a promising energy storage technology due to their high specific energy density. However, the disposal of waste metal-oxygen batteries can cause environmental issues. This study reports the use of a redox mediator, PTIO, to enhance the performance of manganese-oxygen batteries. Trace amounts of PTIO increase the discharge capacity of the batteries and improve the formation of manganese dioxide on the cathode. Moreover, the dismantled cathode can be reused as an electrode for supercapacitors through a simple calcining process. The recycled electrode exhibits excellent specific capacitance and demonstrates potential for high-quality electrode materials.
