Plasmonic MoO3-x nanosheets by anodic oxidation of molybdenum for colorimetric sensing of hydrogen peroxide

Z. Ahmadzadeh et al.

Summary: In this study, plasmonic MoO3-x colloidal nanosheets with a deep blue color were fabricated using a simple anodic oxidation method and examined for colorimetric sensing of hydrogen peroxide. The concentration of hydrogen peroxide was found to weaken the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and the blue color of the colloids in a sigmoidal sensing behavior. The impact of anodizing potential and time on sensing performance was investigated, and a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.2-0.9 mu M was achieved. The study also demonstrated the immobilization of MoO3-x nanosheets on felt fibers for colorimetric assay, enabling naked eye detection of hydrogen peroxide in a concentration range of 800 mu m to 100 mM. Overall, this research provides a facile approach to detect hydrogen peroxide at the human-positive diabetes level and has significant implications for the development of hydrogen peroxide sensors.

DFT study of hydrogen bonding between metal hydroxides and organic molecules containing N, O, S, and P heteroatoms: clusters vs. surfaces

Lea Gasparic et al.

Summary: The study investigated hydrogen bonding between water molecules or metal hydroxides and small organic molecules with N, O, S, or P heteroatoms using DFT calculations. Results showed that Cu(OH)2 clusters are generally better H-bond acceptors and donors than water molecules, while Al(OH)3 clusters prefer to act as H-bond donors or form two H-bonds. Various organic molecules containing N, O, S, or P heteroatoms were analyzed, with imidazole and (CH3)2POOH forming the strongest H-bonds. Structural differences between surface and small-cluster calculations were identified, with small clusters unable to capture all H-bond interactions present on surfaces. Aqueous conditions were also examined using a continuum solvation model, showing an influence on H-bond properties and inducing deprotonation of adsorbed molecules in some cases.

Oxygen vacancies in oxidized and reduced vertically aligned α-MoO3 nanoblades

Sohaila Z. Noby et al.

Summary: Functionalized materials are important for advancements in physics, chemistry, materials science, and biology due to their unique electronic properties. This study focuses on tuning oxygen vacancy-mediated intrinsic defects in vertically aligned alpha-MoO3 crystals through thermal treatment under different reducing and oxidizing atmospheres. The experimental results demonstrate the positions and concentrations of the oxygen vacancies and the restitution of the oxygen ions. These oxygen vacancies do not affect the optical band gap, but significantly impact the electrical conductivity.

Bonding dependent lithium storage behavior of molybdenum oxides for next-generation Li-ion batteries

Hyunwoo Kim et al.

Summary: Molybdenum oxides, such as MoO2 and MoO3, have been extensively studied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. This study compares the charge storage behavior of these two oxides and reveals that MoO3 undergoes a conversion reaction, while MoO2 accommodates lithium as metallic lithium. The different metal-oxygen bonding properties of MoO2 and MoO3 are found to be the origin of their different electrochemical properties.
