SiOC coatings on yttria stabilized zirconia microspheres using a fluidized bed coating process

Sanjay Kumar Devendhar Singh et al.

Summary: In this study, defect-free SiOC coatings were prepared on yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) microspheres by a fluidized bed coating process. The impact regime diagram constructed demonstrated that the coating mechanisms were collision/impact. Two-step pyrolysis in Ar achieved complete coating layers, which were comprised of SiOC, SiO2, SiC, and graphite, providing a new method for producing SiOC coatings on micron spheres for the application of nuclear TRISO fuel particles.

Effects of transition metals on the evolution of polymer-derived SiOC ceramics

Ni Yang et al.

Summary: This study indicates that transition metal catalysts such as nickel, cobalt, and iron can induce the formation of metal silicides, β-SiC, and graphitic carbon in silicon oxycarbides during pyrolysis, with different catalytic activity orders. The research findings suggest that Fe has a lower defect density for turbostratic carbon growth, and the phase separation of SiOC is more dominant compared to local carbothermal reduction between SiO2 and C in the SiOC/M (M = Ni, Co, or Fe) systems.

Porous SiOC/SiC ceramics via an active-filler-catalyzed polymer-derived method

Advaith Rau et al.

Summary: Bulk and porous SiOC materials were synthesized using a PDC method with Fe catalyst, showing enhanced beta-SiC content and phase separation of the amorphous SiOxCy phase. Fe-catalyzed samples at 1100 degrees C exhibited significant beta-SiC content and improved gas sorption capabilities. Gibbs free energy minimization method and vapor-liquid-solid (VLS), solid-liquid-solid (SLS), and classical nucleation theories were used to analyze the Fe effect on the phase content of the pyrolyzed samples.
