Cascade CO2 electroreduction enables efficient carbonate-free production of ethylene

Adnan Ozden et al.

Summary: CO2 electroreduction is a promising method to convert waste emissions into chemicals, but the process suffers from CO2 loss to carbonate, consuming a large amount of energy input. By coupling a cascade SOEC-MEA approach, the energy efficiency can be improved, reducing energy intensity.

Development of high-performance roll-to-roll-coated gas-diffusion-electrode-based fuel cells

Scott A. Mauger et al.

Summary: This study focuses on determining fabrication conditions to create high-performance roll-to-roll-coated gas-diffusion electrodes for proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells. It was found that using a higher drying rate can promote the formation of an ionomer-rich surface in the electrode. The R2R-coated GDEs have a higher surface ionomer concentration than spray-coated GDEs, eliminating the need for an additional ionomer overlayer and reducing processing steps and manufacturing costs.

Absence of CO2 electroreduction on copper, gold and silver electrodes without metal cations in solution

Mariana C. O. Monteiro et al.

Summary: The study found that metal cations play a crucial role in stabilizing the CO2 intermediate during the reduction process on gold electrodes. Density functional theory simulations confirmed that partially desolvated metal cations enable the reduction by stabilizing the CO2- intermediate through short-range electrostatic interactions. In conclusion, the positively charged species from the electrolyte are key to stabilizing the crucial reaction intermediate.
